During my time of prayer earlier this week, I started to think about the first part of Proverbs 18:21 which says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue…” Even though the words are few, it’s a powerful reminder of what our words can do. With one word, a person can destroy another person, and at the same time, one word is all it takes to bring joy and comfort to someone.
For the most part, when we think about this verse and the words that we speak, we are thinking about others. But, have you ever thought about the words that you are speaking to yourself every day? Sometimes, we can manage to keep quiet and not speak words that might hurt others. Yes, on occasions we have to “bite our tongue” in order to not offend or destroy others with our words, but that is very difficult to do when we are speaking to ourselves. Those words are very difficult to control and there is no such thing as “biting our tongue” when speaking to ourselves. Did you know that your voice is the most influential voice in your life? For many, the words that you speak to yourself are more powerful than what God says. Not because our words have more power than God’s, but rather, because often times we are not listening to what God is saying and we are hearing, very clearly, what we are saying.
Are you destroying your life with the words that you are speaking to yourself or are you encouraging and giving life to your own life with what you are saying to yourself? This is a very thought provoking question and it’s a question that we all need to ask ourselves. The answer to this question can say a lot about you and your walk through this life.
In Joshua 1:8 we read, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” God wants His Word to be in your mouth, so that you can speak it constantly. You are to meditate on the Word of God day and night so that it becomes what you speak. Not only what you speak to others but also to yourself. According to this verse, as you keep His Word in your mouth and speak it, your way will be prosperous and you will have good success.
Make a daily effort to mediate on His Word and speak that Word to your own life. Sometimes, we can be our own worst enemies with what we are declaring about ourselves. Do yourself a favor and tell yourself words of life and not death. Speak what God is saying about yourself. Declare that you are a child of God, blessed, redeemed, and loved by Him. Encourage yourself by saying that you are more than a conqueror and the head and not the tail. Tell yourself that God is in control and that no weapon that is formed against you can prosper. Look at yourself in the mirror and whisper to yourself that you are beautiful in His eyes. Try it, have a conversation with yourself right now and let your words give you life.
