There’s a story about a city dweller who was visiting relatives on a farm. While on the farm, the farmer gave a whistle and his dog herded the cattle into the corral, then latched the gate with her paw. “Wow, that’s some dog. What’s her name?” said the city dweller. The forgetful farmer thought a minute, then asked, “What do you call that red flower that smells good and has thorns on the stem?” “A rose?” replied the city dweller. “That’s it!” said the farmer, then turned to his wife and said, “Hey Rose, what do we call this dog?
Just like the farmer in the story, we tend to forget a lot and often times, the things that we forget are the good things that have happened in our lives. This is especially the case when we are going through difficult situations. That’s who we are. It is difficult to remember the good things in life when we are facing a storm. We forget the great moments we’ve had with our children when they are not behaving correctly and we tend to forget about the good qualities of people especially when those people have hurt us.
In Psalm 103:2 we read, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget none of His benefits.” The message version says it like this, “O my soul, bless God, don’t forget a single blessing! We see in this verse that God knows that we can be forgetful sometimes and reminds us that we shouldn’t forget His blessings, the great things that He has done in our lives. Then the Psalm makes mention of some of these benefits or blessings, “Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases;4 Who redeems your life from the pit, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion; 5 Who satisfies your years with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle.” (Psalm 103:3-5)
God is so good to us and yet, we often forget how good and wonderful He is and has been. It is when we forget about the goodness of God and all of His blessings that we fall into a trap. We take our eyes away from God and what He has done and focus on the things that surround us, which often times can be negative. It is then that we worry, we become fearful, we get anxious, we get angry, and so on. Why? Because we have forgotten about His blessings.
We need to keep in mind that even when things are not going well, God is still good and continues to bless us. The problem is that we forget. I want to share some verses with you that you need to keep in your heart and not forget, especially in the midst of difficulties:
- Psalm 77:8 – “Has his mercy ceased forever? Has His promise failed forever? The answer is No!
- Philippians 1:6 – “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will compete it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
- Psalm 145:9 – “The Lord is good to all, And His tender mercies are over all His works.”
- John 14:1 – “Let not our heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.”
God is a God who forgives our sins and heals our diseases, Who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion. He satisfies your years with good things.
What has God done in your life? Do you remember? Focus on those things and don’t fall in the trap of forgetting His benefits. Wherever you find yourself today, remember what He has done.
