It was March 4th, 1933 when we first heard the famous quote from former President of the United States of America Franklin D. Roosevelt, “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” When FDR took office, the United States had just gotten out of the Great Depression. The people of the United States were fearful of their future, fearful about their jobs, fearful about what was going to happen to their families, etc. Fear was a common household emotion then and that is why FDR very eloquently spoke those words.
About 80 years after Franklin D. Roosevelt gave that inaugural address, fear continues to grip the hearts of many in the United States and around the world. People today continue to be fearful about their futures, fearful about their jobs, fearful about the economy, fearful about their marriage, fearful about their health, fearful about their children, fearful about how much money they have or don’t have, and the list seems to be endless.
Fear has been around since the fall of man. As a matter of fact, the first sentence that Adam spoke to God after he had sinned was, “I heard Your voice in the garden and I was afraid…” Genesis 3:10. God is well aware that fear is an emotion that has gripped the lives of millions around the world and that is why about 360 times in the Bible we read the words: “Fear not.”
Are you one of the millions of people who live their lives in fear? Is fear causing you to spend many sleepless nights wondering what will happen? Are you spending your days stressed out because you fear the worst? If that is you, God has a word for you today!
In the book of Isaiah 41:10 God says: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you. I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” When Isaiah wrote these words, the kingdom of Israel was pretty much destroyed by enemy armies and Judah feared the worst; they were in a desperate situation. But how wonderful that in the midst of a desperate situation, God shows up and says “fear not!” Notice that He did not say, “I will remove the difficult situation,” no, he just said “fear not.” What He is a saying is: in the midst of your trial, fear not. In the midst of your sickness, fear not. In the midst of your difficulty, fear not. In the midst of your financial struggles, fear not. In the midst of your tribulation, whatever it is, fear not.
Having Jesus as your Lord and Savior does not mean that you will live a problem free life. It was Jesus that said that in this life we would face difficult times. He knows that we live in a fallen world and that many situations in life will cause us to be afraid. But being the loving God that He is, He comes to us and says “Fear Not.”
“Fear not for I am with you.” Can you understand what that means? He is saying fear not because I am God; the God who spoke the universe into existence, the God who has the oceans in the palm of His hands, the God who created you from dirt, the God who keeps the stars, the moon, and the sun in place, the Almighty God, and I am with you!
In the midst of our fearful situation, God comes to us and reminds us that He is with us and that He will give us the strength that we need to face that situation. How exciting to know that when we are weak and afraid, He, the Almighty God has decided to give us strength; strength to face the giant, strength to stand firm and not be shaken, strength to know that God is in control and there is nothing to fear.
Not only does God tell us that He will be with us and give us strength, but He also declares that He will help us. That is great news! Are you afraid because of your sickness? Today, God, the Healer, reminds you that He will help you. Are you fearful about your finances? Well, God, who owns the gold and the silver, says “I will help you.” Are you losing sleep because you are afraid? God, the best helper ever, says to you, “I got this my child, sleep peacefully because I can calm the storm.”
“I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” Are you able to comprehend the significance of these words? God is declaring to us that even if the enemy, the world, whoever is trying to bring you down, is coming against you, he won’t be able to do so because He is the one holding you up and there is no power in the universe that can overpower the right hand of God. Even the devil himself knows that he is no match for God. Satan knows that if God is upholding you, there is no way to bring you down. The problem is that many Christians do not know that. So what does he do? He lies to you so that you become fearful and fall.
Don’t believe the lie of the enemy. Don’t focus on the report of the world. Don’t allow the bad news to frighten you. God Almighty is with you, ready to strengthen you and help you overcome whatever situation you are facing. Just sit and trust on the Rock who is Jesus Christ and let Him uphold you. Do not fear, God is in control!
